All young people and staff at Underley Garden Children’s Home now have the opportunity to go swimming once a week at a local community run swimming pool. These sessions are always well supported as the young people love to go to learn to swim and play with the floats. The session are fully staffed by lifeguards and the young people are able to enjoy the use of the whole pool as this is a private session.
There is a lot of research to suggest that swimming pools are beneficial to children on the autism spectrum, these include invaluable therapy, a social outlet and can be beneficial to allow ease of movement. Because of their sensory needs many of our young people simply couldn’t cope with a pool session where the public were in because of the noise and unfamiliar people. These sessions allow our young people to have stress free access.
